Come join us for five days and four nights walking through history in the “green heart of Italy,” home to heavenly peaks, iconic artworks, and a host of saintly sons and daughters. We travel up from Rome to the Valle Umbra, where for the first two nights we will stay in the environs of Bevagna, visiting Spello one evening for dinner and Pinturricchio’s masterpiece, the Capella Baglioni. Come walk in the footsteps of Francis of Assisi through landscapes immediately recognizable in the frescoes of the saint’s life by Benozzo Gozzoli in Montefalco.
The first half of our journey will culminate in a visit to the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, a treasure trove of Gothic painting by the likes of (Tuscans) Giotto, Simone Martini, and Pietro Lorenzetti. From Assisi, we shift location to the Val Nerina, where we will stay in the historic Abbey and Residenza d’epoca of San Pietro in Valle, founded on the spot where Syrian hermits settled caves along the river valley before the birth of St Benedict (nearby, at Norcia). Our days will be spent strolling along the verdant banks of the Nera and following a disused railway to the ancient town of Spoleto, which we enter on foot via the unforgettable Ponte delle Torri (newly reopened after years of renovation following the last earthquake).
Along the way, we will savor the best of Umbrian cuisine, rich in truffles, mushrooms, and other frutti del bosco, drizzled in local olive oil and served up with a fittingly holy wine, Sagrantino di Montefalco. Pax et Bonum.
